The Newbies Survival Guide to SEO
Hey Rookie, let’s get started.
First we need to figure out what our audience is searching for.
The key to doing keyword research is to know your audience, and why they looking for your content in the first place.
This will help you figure out:
- How can you help people?
- Is there enough demand?
- What are people trying to learn about?
Let’s talk about this some more.
Brainstorm Before You Begin Rookie.
Just remember the BBB buddy.
Brainstorm before beginning.
People skip this step which gives you the advantage.
What you would like to rank for, and what your reader is searching for, can be very different indeed.
Here’s an example. Billy & Tammy’s (a delicious Cheese cake store) is pumped about SEO and wants to know how to increase their rankings in their organic search results.
In their case, they should get to know their customers better. To do this, we should ask some questions, such as:
- Which kinds of cheesecakes are being searched for online?
- Who is the individual that is seeking out this search?
- What times of the year is the demand high for the cheesecake? (Are you getting hungry yet?)
- I.e. Christmas, thanksgiving?
- In which way are people seeking this information?
- How would you type it in?
- Which way would you ask google or amazon?
- How would your friends and family ask?
- Why do people want to eat cheesecake?
- Do people want to eat a healthy organic Cheesecake? or is it more of an impulsive buy for naughty junk-food night?
- Does your reader live in your own city, province, or country? How about half-way across the world?
Lastly, focus on actually helping your customer and creating high quality content. This is how you will grow your audience and be of service to others.
Chances are that you already have some keywords and phrases that you would like to write about.
You may have thought of some products and services that are related to your niche.
This is a fine place to start.
Use a keyword research tool like Jaxxy to determine the average monthly searches, as well as to discover similar keywords, popular search terms, and what’s trending in your niche.
Here is an example:
A dentist that specializes in wisdom tooth removal.
Search for “wisdom tooth removal” in Jaxxy, and you will find very similar search terms including:
- Is wisdom tooth removal painful?
- Wisdom tooth recovery
- How many days do you need off for wisdom teeth removal?
When finding keywords for your niche, you want to go for the low hanging fruit. Look for the search terms with lower competition and lower search results. This will help you land on page one.
Expand Your Influence Rookie
By the way, it is not your website that ranks for keywords, it is your individual posts.
People get their organic traffic to their posts more then their the homepage, which is why it is a good idea to offer unique content.
Go For The Low Hanging Fruit Rookie
The more people are searching for a keyword or phrase, the harder you will need to work to compete for the listing.
You can think of this as the difficulty level.
Big name GURU’s will most likely rank for the top 10 results in competitive keywords and phrases.
Since you are new, we will avoid spending the years of work that are required to compete with them, and instead focus on the low hanging fruit. (low competition keywords)
By this I mean, we need to look for very peculiar keywords.
Let’s Talk About the Low Hanging Fruit
It would be wonderful to be on the first page for the search “Law of Attraction”, wouldn’t it?
Is the person looking for information on to attract a partner?
Are they trying to find information about electric magnetism?
Google cannot determine this, so they try to help you out. Targeting “law of attraction” indicates that you are not being specific enough with your search.
If you are searching for “the secret”, Google will think that you may also be interested in spirituality.
They are simply trying to help you narrow down your search.
Some people mistakenly disregard the power of the low hanging fruit and often regret this.
The keywords with low competition get better results, because they are helping people with distinct searches.
Someone that is looking for “the law of attraction” is likely just checking it out.
However, if people are looking for “most affordable subconscious programming hypnosis for confidence”, then you can help these people and make a new friend in the process.
If you solve peoples problems, then they will continue to buy from you.
